Heat handle Warriors, spoil Jimmy Butler’s return to Miami

MIAMI – Jimmy Butler’s return to Miami was met with a tribute video, a mix of cheers and boos, and ultimately, a tough loss for his new team. The Miami Heat overwhelmed the Golden State Warriors with a 112-86 victory, dampening Butler’s homecoming in front of a sold-out crowd at Kaseya Center.

Butler, now with the Warriors after a midseason trade, watched highlights from his time in Miami, including his iconic 2020 NBA Finals moment. He acknowledged the fans’ reception, raising his arms in appreciation, but stayed focused on the game.

“I got a lot of love for the city and the fans,” Butler said. “The video was nice, but I wasn’t too emotional. We wanted to win, but it didn’t go our way.”

The Heat had no trouble making a statement, with all five starters scoring in double figures. Bam Adebayo led the charge with 27 points and eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Butler struggled, shooting 2-of-7 from the field and finishing with 11 points, six rebounds, and two assists.

Miami’s only hiccup of the night was a technical issue—its hype video played without audio. Fans quickly took over, chanting “Let’s go, Heat!” to set the tone.

Warriors Struggles Continue

Golden State, already without Stephen Curry (pelvic contusion), suffered its second straight road loss. Coach Steve Kerr acknowledged Miami’s dominance, saying, “They were ready. You shoot 17-for-25 from three, you’re going to win.”

The Warriors, clinging to the sixth seed in the Western Conference, know they need to turn things around. “Friday’s the biggest game of the year for us,” Kerr said, looking ahead to their matchup against the Pelicans.

Butler Closes the Miami Chapter

Butler’s departure from Miami wasn’t without controversy. After expressing frustration over contract negotiations and losing joy in his situation, tensions led to multiple suspensions before the Heat traded him. He signed a two-year, $111 million extension with the Warriors and has since emphasized feeling “wanted” again.

Despite the rough night, Butler took time in Miami to visit his coffee shop, play dominoes with friends, and spend time with his family. Reflecting on his time with the Heat, he said, “That chapter has ended. I’m grateful for my time here, the bonds I built, and the role Miami played in my career.”

Butler and the Warriors now turn their focus to bouncing back as the playoff race heats up.
