Manoj Bharathiraja, Tamil actor and son of veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, passed away at the age of 48 in Chennai on March 25, 2025. The actor had recently undergone bypass surgery and was recuperating at his home in Chetpet when he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.
Early Life and Career
Born in 1976 to Bharathiraja and Chandraleela, Manoj made his acting debut in the 1999 film Taj Mahal, directed by his father. Though the film did not perform well at the box office, AR Rahman’s music and Bharathiraja’s song picturization left a lasting impression on audiences.
Throughout his career, Manoj starred in several Tamil films, including Samudhiram, Kadal Pookkal, Varushamellam Vasantham, and Eera Nilam. Despite facing ups and downs in his acting journey, he remained a notable figure in the Tamil film industry.
Transition to Supporting Roles and Directorial Debut
After a few leading roles, Manoj transitioned into supporting roles, featuring in films such as Vaaimai, Eeswaran, Maanaadu, and Viruman.
In 2023, he made his directorial debut with Margazhi Thingal, a romantic drama starring his father Bharathiraja, along with Suseenthiran, Shyam Selvan, and Rakshana.
Final Projects and Legacy
Manoj was last seen in the Prime Video series Snakes & Ladders. His contributions to Tamil cinema as both an actor and filmmaker remain significant.
He is survived by his wife, actor Nandana, and their two daughters, Arshitha and Mathivadhani. His untimely demise is a great loss to the industry and his loved ones.
