Business leader Sir Sam Jonah has described illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, as an economic, health and moral problem, warning that the pursuit of wealth without responsibility is damaging Ghana’s natural resources. He said discussions about sustainability must confront the effects of illegal mining on rivers, forests and farmland. “Rivers that fed our grandparents now run the colour of chocolate milk,” he said. Sir Sam was delivering the keynote address at Methodist University Ghana’s international conference in Accra on Thursday, October 15, as the university marked its 25th anniversary. Drawing on his career in the mining industry, he said mining companies and individuals must consider what they leave behind after extracting resources from the earth.
