Governance specialist Valentin Kwasi Mensah has called for adequate funding and resources for Ghana’s judiciary, arguing that judicial independence cannot be guaranteed without the financial and material capacity to deliver justice. Speaking at a JoyNews public lecture on the theme “Even Judges Must Eat – An Outside-In Provocation,” Mr Mensah said judges could be independent in principle but struggle to perform their duties effectively if courts lacked adequate staff, functional computers and operational funds. “Even judges must eat captures an important truth. Judges and court workers need decent conditions, while courts need buildings, records, equipment and functioning systems. Independence requires the means to do the work,” he said.
