GPRTU, GRTCC call off planned sit-down strike after meeting with ministers

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have called off their planned sit-down strike following assurances from government to address concerns over trading activities on road corridors. The two transport groups announced the planned sit-down strike on November 2, 2026, protesting what they described as the authorities' failure to clear roadways of trading activities. The proposed action was expected to disrupt commercial transport services across the country. The latest decision means transport services will continue without the disruption that would have resulted from the planned strike. In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the two transport groups said the decision followed a meeting held on Tuesday, November 3, with the Ministers of the Interior, Transport, and Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. The unions said the ministers had committed to addressing their concerns, which also include the provision of adequate road signage, sustained public education and continued engagement with transport operators.
